We design, build and test.

Whether it’s electrical circuits or mechanical parts, writing code or spinning spanners, our student teams have design & build opportunities to suit every interest.

  • NU Racing is our electric single-seat race car team, competing in the national Formula-SAE competition.

Founded in 2003, the team has contested nearly 20 Formula-SAE events. We scored our best result in 2022, and in 2023 we placed - 2nd - in autocross, skidpad and buisness events. This year we are aiming for a podium.

  • NU Rocketry is our High-Power-Rocketry team, contesting the Spaceport America Cup.

NU Rocketry is our youngest team, founded in 2020. We competed our competition platform earlier this year and competed in the 2024 Spaceport America Cup held in June. We placed - 16th - in our category out of 70 other universities.

  • NU Marine is our autonomous marine vessel team, competing in the international Maritime Robot-X Challenge.

Founded in 2014, we achieved our best competition result - 5th - in the 2022 event. This year at the 2024 Maritime RobotX competition, we hope to improve on that result as we develop further autonomous capabilities.

  • Learn: Electronics Design and Manufacture

Our student teams specialise in the design and manufacture of custom Printed Circuit Boards and electrical enclosures.

Through NU Teams, you’ll learn how to select components, design layouts, interface with overseas manufacturers, and solder your own through-hole and surface-mount boards. You’ll also learn to wire, crimp and pin your own electrical enclosures.

  • Learn: Mechanical Design and Manufacture

Our student teams design and fabricate all manner of mechanical components - from tubular welded chassis frameworks to complex sheet metal firewalls.
Through NU Teams, you’ll learn how to design these complex parts in CAD and manufacture them using our well-resourced student workshop.

  • Learn: Field Testing and Operations

Whether it’s on the water, in the sky or at the track, field testing is in our DNA.

Through NU Teams, you’ll learn to manage and operate field test days, including experiment planning, data logging and analysis.

  • Learn: Communication and Presentation Skills

We regularly consult with our industry partners and extensive alumni network to help steer our projects.

Through NU Teams, you’ll learn how to present complex design ideas in a succinct way, and how to incorporate external feedback into your designs.

  • Learn: Data Analysis and Troubleshooting

All of our platforms are sophisticated data-logging machines.

Through NU Teams, you’ll learn how to log and ingest data. You’ll also learn how to analyse this information to make operational and design decisions.

  • Learn: Sponsor and Partner Management/Interaction

NU Teams relies on the support of Industry Partners and sponsors to achieve our mission.
Through NU Teams, you will meet and interact with our industry partners and sponsors. You’ll learn how to represent our organisation and build connections for your professional life after University.
