 About Us

NU Racing provides an opportunity for undergraduates to gain real world, work ready project skills through the design and development of a formula style race car.

2022 will see the development of the NU Racing EV.Three vehicle, the third of its kind for the team.  With EV.Three, the team is confident on building on previous success and achieving a 500 point total in the 2022 Formula SAE-A competition.

About the Formula SAE Competition

The concept behind Formula SAE is that a fictional manufacturing company has contracted a student design team to develop a small Formula-style race car. The prototype race car is to be evaluated for its potential as a production item. The target marketing group for the race car is the non-professional weekend autocross racer. Each student team designs, builds and tests a prototype based on a series of rules, whose purpose is both ensuring on-track safety (the cars are driven by the students themselves) and promoting clever problem solving.

Events and Submissions

The prototype race car is judged in a number of different events, in both Static and Dynamic categories.

In addition to these events, various sponsors of the competition provide awards for superior design accomplishments. For example, best use of E-85 ethanol fuel, innovative use of electronics, recyclability, crash worthiness, analytical approach to design, and overall dynamic performance are some of the awards available. At the beginning of the competition, the vehicle is checked for rule compliance during the Technical Inspection. Its braking ability, rollover stability and noise levels are checked before the vehicle is allowed to compete in the dynamic events (Skidpad, Autocross, Acceleration, and Endurance).

Formula SAE encompasses all aspects of a business including research, design, manufacturing, testing, developing, marketing, management, and fundraising.

Our Team

Robert Stanley

Team Leader

Mechanical Engineering

Robert’s goals for 2022 as the team leader are to firstly build a fun and productive team environment where everyone is welcomed and each individual’s talents are celebrated. With a collaborative team between the 2022 FYP’s and juniors, Robert’s second goal is to bring NU Racing to the top of the formula SAE competition with the team’s third electric vehicle EV.Three.

Matthew Whitworth

Chief Engineer

Mechatronics Engineering

Matt has been a member of NU Racing since late 2018, therefore he is able to share first-hand the successes and challenges of previous years to ensure everyone’s individual projects come together with minimal setbacks. As the team’s 2022 chief engineer it is Matt’s role to facilitate the manufacture of EV.Three and to ensure the car reaches the competition in December of this year in both a reliable and fully compliant success.
